Why upgrade
Is it time for a new fuse box?
Why a modern upgrade keeps you safer
- Instant safety cut-off
- Modern units detect electrical faults and cut the power in a fraction of a second. Older fuse boxes often fail to trip fast enough, increasing the risk of fire or shock.
- Individual RCBO protection
- I install advanced RCBOs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent protection), so each circuit has its own dedicated protection. If a fault occurs in your kitchen, only the kitchen turns off. The rest of your home stays up and running.
- No more split-load blackouts
- Older split-load boards group circuits together, so one minor fault can take down half the power in your house. A modern upgrade completely eliminates this frustrating issue.
- Complete earth fault protection
- Many older boxes entirely lack the vital earth fault protection required by modern safety standards to protect your family and appliances.
Signs your fuse box needs replacing
If your current setup has any of the following, your home may not be fully protected to modern safety standards.
- Wooden backing
- The box is mounted on wood or has an outdated wooden frame, a major fire hazard.
- Rewirable fuses
- You still have to replace pieces of fuse wire by hand when a fuse blows.
- Plastic enclosure
- Your fuse box has a plastic casing rather than a modern, fire-retardant metal enclosure.
- Split-load circuit boards
- Your board groups several rooms onto a single safety switch. If a minor fault happens in one room, it instantly plunges half your house into darkness.
- Unable to add new circuits
- If you're planning an extension or installing an EV charger, regulations prevent new circuits being connected to older boards.
- Outdated or missing safety protection
- No RCD protection (the safety switch that cuts the power if electricity leaks to earth), outdated "Type AC" RCDs, or no surge protection devices (SPDs) leave your appliances open to sudden voltage spikes and put your safety at risk.
- Flagged on a safety check
- An electrical safety check (EICR) has flagged it.
- Buying or selling
- You're buying or selling, and the survey mentioned it.
What you get
- A new consumer unit, fitted and tested.
- Every circuit labelled, so you know what's what.
- A certificate for your records.

My pre-board safety and testing process
Before I upgrade your fuse box, I thoroughly test your property's existing circuits. Connecting a modern consumer unit to old, unchecked wiring can cause sensitive new switches to trip.
My diagnostic tests check that your existing cables, earth connections, and main gas and water bonding are healthy, safe and up to regulations before your new board goes live.
| What I check | Why I do it |
|---|---|
| Earthing and bonding. Main earth connections, and gas and water pipe bonding. | Makes sure your pipework is safely earthed, to prevent severe shocks. |
| Continuity. Unbroken paths on socket rings and earth wires. | Makes sure the safety paths are intact, so fuses blow instantly during a fault. |
| Insulation resistance. The condition of hidden cables, and any wear in the wiring. | Stops your new consumer unit tripping as soon as it is fitted. |

Inside my boards
Most people never see inside a consumer unit. Inside mine, circuits are arranged neatly and every circuit is labelled clearly.
