- Can't I just run an extension lead outside?
- Now and then, with a proper outdoor lead, yes. For anything regular, an outdoor socket is safer. It's weatherproof, it's protected by an RCD (a switch that cuts the power in a split second if something goes wrong), and there's no lead trailing through a door or window.
- Does cable in the garden need to be special?
- Yes. Cable buried in the garden or run across it has to be armoured, or protected another way, so a spade or a mower can't cut into it. On the wall of the house, ordinary cable in the right fittings is fine.
- Can security lights come on only at night?
- Yes. Most have a light sensor, so they only come on after dark, and a motion sensor you can aim and set for how long they stay on.
