- When should the electrician come in?
- Twice. First fix runs the cables before the units go in and the walls are finished. Second fix fits the sockets, switches and lights. Talk to me when you plan the layout, so the sockets end up where the worktops go.
- Does an oven need its own circuit?
- A cooker, a range or an electric hob does. Occasionally some smaller single ovens (2kW or less) can run off a fused connection unit. You can check the manufacturer's instructions.
- Can I have a socket in the bathroom?
- A shaver socket, yes. Ordinary sockets are only allowed well away from the bath or shower, so in most bathrooms the answer is no. Illuminated mirrors and towel rails are wired in instead.
- Will I get a certificate?
- Yes. Kitchen and bathroom work is tested, and you get the certificate. Keep it: when you sell, the buyer's solicitor often asks for paperwork on electrical work.
